Rob Gillion reviews 'A Class of Their Own' by Hugh Steadman Williams

Hugh Steadman Williams is one of those playwrights who manage to present to their audiences, and engage us in, the most complex and universal human situations with ease of access combined with challenge. This is becoming a rare commodity and one that the Friends of Westminster Productions truly appreciated in this performance held in The Barn Theatre at the IofC centre in London on 24 March, 2007.

The performance was one of Westminster Productions’ regular Saturday matinee performances. ‘The truth will set you free’ is a biblical principal that we know to be life giving and in this production Hugh gave us the opportunity to assess this and appreciate how complex and yet how simple is the need for truth. The consequences of passion and devotion, love and mortality, forgiveness and restoration, entrapment and liberation are addressed by each character within this tale, and we ache for them, as they discover the revelations which question what love is. I was deeply moved by it, thanks to superb writing and direction and the quality of all the actors’ performances. It was indeed a play in a class of its own!
