Basil Entwistle was in an unusual position in the early post World War II period to come into contact with the people in Japan who were to emerge as the leaders in the economy and in the government directing the Japanese miracle. As a representative of Moral Rearmament, he had unusual access to leaders who were concerned with the moral qualities of the post-war Japanese. He has written an extremely careful, precise, informative and inspirational account of his experiences. For those of us who have read about these great leaders at a distance, it is a fascinating history in highly polished style.’ Professor Ezra F Vogel Chairman, Council on East Asian Studies, Harvard University author of Japan as Number One

‘The book is a valuable contribution to understanding the hidden ideological developments in politics, industrial relations and economic life, as well as the international relations of the post-war period. I commend it.’ Toshiwo Doko, Honorary Chairman, Keidanren, Federation of Economic Organisations

Few countries have experienced such a swift and dramatic transformation as has Japan in the past forty years. Her people staggered up from defeat and devastation to join the ranks of the super-powers. Western observers, speculating on the reasons for Japan’s economic miracle, have singled out her cultural traditions, social disciplines and financial and economic advantages. They often create the impression that, with these benefits, the country’s resurgence was a foregone conclusion.

The author portrays a country whose thinking, as well as her buildings, was in ruins. The Japanese had to make basic choices. Unfolding through his eyes is an untold story of a determined minority of leaders, supported by a network of people and organizations who helped to strengthen the nation’s democratic framework.

It was his privilege to meet and work with the post-war prime minister, the heads of such powerful organizations as Toshiba, Toyo Rayon. the National Railways and the largest youth association. He came to know a great variety of men and women - politicians, assembly-line workers, housewives, students, bureaucrats - and he describes vividly their struggles to rebuild their country on secure foundations and restore her to the family of nations.

Today, we look at Japan with varying emotions, from admiration and respect to envy and fear, as we focus on her economic achievements. But even more significant could be the spirit and commitment of the men and women portrayed in this book, as they worked together to lead their country in the right direction.
