Stepping Stones - A German biography

A life of service

Hansjörg Gareis was born in 1926 in Germany, the second son of a professional army officer who rose to be Commanding General of a Tank Corps in Hitler's Army. The author joined the German Navy, aged 17, during the Second World War. The Corvette on which he served was sunk by a Russian torpedo in the Baltic Sea.

The story of this family unfolds through the traumatic decades of the 1930s and 1940s. It looks at the choices facing people at large, as well as high senior military personnel. HansJörg encountered people committed to Moral Re-armament at the end of the war, and spent the following 20 years in action with them. He also worked with Up With People that set a somewhat different course. The reader follows him and later also his wife in ups and downs on five continents
