CBC Radio recently told the South African story of reconciliation between Letlapa Mphahlele and Ginn Fourie, subjects of the award-winning documentary Beyond Forgiving.
On 9 April 2014 the show Ideas – hosted by Paul Kennedy – rebroadcast The Long Walk to Freedom at the 20th anniversary of the historic South African post-apartheid elections. First broadcast ten years ago, Phillip Coulter’s documentary records the story of a massacre, and the subsequent reconciliation precipitated by one woman’s act of forgiveness. This same story of a bereaved mother reconciling with the freedom fighter responsible for her daughter’s death, is now told in the film Beyond Forgiving – produced by Initiatives of Change.
Beyond Forgiving has received much acclaim - including awards such as the Gold Award for Inspiration (International Film Festival – Inspiration, Peace and Equality) and the Award of Excellence (International Film Festival – Spirituality Religion, Vision). Marina Cantacuzino – founder of The Forgiveness Project – calls it “A beautifully crafted film about two people’s journey of forgiveness. It gives voice to a humanity born out of intense sorrow, and shows forgiveness as a way of living creatively with the problem of irreversibility.”
