The Other 3 Rs

A course for schools - for use with 9-13 year olds

The Other 3Rs is a unique series of teaching modules, developed in 1991 and revised in 2002, in response to requests from teachers for material to meet the demands of the curriculum in the areas of Personal and Social/Health Education and Citizenship. The Course can be used across the curriculum.

The aims of the course are

  • to help young people to mature in their attitudes and actions, thereby becoming more responsible for themselves and the world around them
  • to help them explore the process of creating relationships and how to resolve problems
  • to encourage a deeper understanding and respect for life itself

The Other 3Rs comprises nine individual modules each of a number of topics on a specific theme. Guide notes for teachers are provided for each topic, printed on coloured card. Worksheets and resource material for students are provided on white card suitable for photocopying.

Teachers will be able either to pursue a subject in depth through several topics, or simply to take one or two topics from modules.

Using the course

A module contains

• pages for the teacher stating the aim of each topic and its development.

• pupils' worksheets.

• resource sheets to be used in conjunction with worksheets, or to encourage discussion and other activities.

The blocks at the foot of each page identify

R + no. - which 'R'

M + no. - which module

PAGE + no. - e.g. R1-M1-PAGE 1

topics are numbered as for the complete module, though each one can stand on its own. Sometimes alternative approaches are suggested catering for pupils of varying abilities. As far as possible a drama/role-play suggestion is included as this activity is particularly helpful in exploring the subjects being offered.

ALL WORK AND RESOURCE SHEETS MAY BE COPIED FOR PUPIL USE BUT COPYRIGHT IS RESERVED FOR THE MODULE AS A WHOLE.

Adapting the course

The Other 3Rs was written primarily for use in UK schools, and some of the concepts and examples used will need to be adapted for use by teachers in other countries, cultures and religious traditions. The authors and publishers give full permission for this customisation, so long as the core structure is respected.

What the experts say

"It will be an invaluable aid for teachers for whom very little good material on moral values and related issues is currently available."

(Stuart Sexton, Director, Independent Primary and Secondary Education Trust)

"I found The Other 3Rs a stimulating resource for introducing and initiating discussion of moral questions. Recent high profile news stories have emphasised even more the need for material of this kind for religious studies, PSE, or more generally in tutor groups."

(Brian Miller, former religious studies and economics teacher, Bristol)
